FUNDING SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAMS
SPAY AND NEUTER SAVES LIVES!
It prevents future unwanted animals from suffering and ending up homeless.
We are in a national, if not worldwide, companion pet over-overpopulation crisis. Fixing a pet is the most effective birth control for dogs and cats to live longer, healthier and happier lives. In many communities, people don’t have access or can’t afford vet care to prevent unwanted litters. This leads to crowded shelters that must euthanize for space or not accept new animals. The only solution to stop the unnecessary suffering and homelessness of animals is to prevent the problem before it starts. The animals most at–risk of shelter euthanasia or death on the side of the road are those that are not fixed because of geographic, socioeconomic and cultural barriers.
Sterilization brings transformative change to pets, owners and communities. Spayed females can’t become pregnant and will never develop diseases such as pyometra, ovarian, uterine or cervical cancers. They will not go into “heat” and are less likely to develop mammary cancer. Neutering a male eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and decreases the possibility of perianal tumors and hernias.
Sterilization also reduces or eliminates many unwanted behaviors in pets. Fixed pets are less likely to roam and get lost, injured or cause a disturbance. Neutered males are less likely to ‘mark their territory” by urinating in the house. Sterilized pets are typically less aggressive too.
C.A.R.E. partners with many groups in multiple states to fund high-volume spay and neuter programs in poor, rural, and indigenous communities. These clinics provide essential sterilization and vaccine services; they are community based solutions to an overwhelming problem. We believe these programs are the most humane and effective way to curb pet-overpopulation and to reduce the burden on animal shelters and community budgets.
These are some of C.A.R.E.’s key partners for spay and neuter collaboration clinics: Bergen Spay and Neuter Alliance (CO and NM), SLV Animal Welfare Alliance (CO), JJ”s Helping Paws (CO), Soul Dog Rescue (Tribal work all over Four Corners area), Colorado Animal Welfare League (CO and NM), Street Dog Coalition (CO), Bro and Tracy Animal Welfare (NM), Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue (ND), Sovereign Nations Veterinary (MN, ND, and SD), Special Pals Of the Shelter (AR), Topeka Community Cat Fix (KS), Street Cats Club (KS), T-Town TNR (OK), etc. In every clinic, we are working with other like-minded funders to accomplish our mission.
